Description
El Pacífico in Medellín (Colombia) is a self-constructed community on the eastern slope of Medellin, Colombia, lacking the status of an official neighbourhood and falling outside the city border. These slopes are prone to hazards due to the steep topography, intense precipitation, and regional geology. This community is highly exposed to hazards and yet, as it is not included in the city maps, the hazard information within the planning system of the city is incapable of representing the detail of a dwelling or block scale. Working with community researchers, we developed a hazard perception exercise based on vulnerability indicators and produced hazard perception and physical vulnerability maps in partnership with the community. This work refined the spatial scale of the hazard maps available for the neighbourhood, going beyond the city planning tools and enabling a building-scale vulnerability assessment that is valuable not only to support community decision-making and planning but also to advocate for public interventions towards reducing disaster risks.
